Part VI

Chapter 35

“Jess friend hurt is?” Teeko asked.

Jess blinked several times, realising Teeko had asked the question at least twice already.

“No Teeko. Not hurt. The Wanderer… the Wanderer has gone! It’s left without us. We’re trapped.”

“Jess friend not give up. Teeko fight. Teeko protect. Jess friend fight.”

“With what?”

“Jess friend robots control?”

“I… I don’t know.”

Jess frowned. He could still feel his implants. He could still use them. With the Wanderer gone it felt like a huge chunk of his mind had been ripped out, but the implants were still there.

Jess reached out for the robots and was surprised to get a response. They were still both in the corridor and taking a pounding. They’d been defending themselves but limiting how many casualties they inflicted, following a default program.

Jess gave them new orders. He allowed them to unleash their full range of weaponry, to fight regardless of the guards’ lives.

The robots reacted immediately, powering forward to get in amongst the guards. They swiftly destroyed the weapons the guards carried which could be a threat, then opened fire on the hidden weaponry in the walls and ceiling.

Several guards standing too close to the robots were badly hurt by flying shrapnel and exposure to high energy beams. For a precious few seconds the station’s heavy weaponry fell silent, automatic cutoffs preventing it firing towards the guards.

Then the weapons opened up again, targeting the robots but with no care for casualties amongst the guards. Someone must have entered an override, but they were too late. The robots had already destroyed most of the weapons which posed a serious threat and they quickly finished the others.

They started on the remaining weapons. Jess considered sending a hold command but decided against it. Better not to give away too much information about what the robots could and couldn’t withstand.

Most of the troopers died in the following sixty seconds, either cut down by their own side’s weapons or by being unfortunate enough to be between a robot and its target. The few who survived managed to scramble well away from the robots.

The corridor fell silent as the last of the hidden weaponry was destroyed. Jess was seeing and hearing through one of the robots and the sudden silence was eerie. He turned the robot towards the surviving guards. Every one of them raised their hands in surrender.

Jess stared at them for long seconds, anger washing over him in a burning tide. These were the men that had tried to kill him. They would have succeeded if it wasn’t for Teeko. And now they wanted mercy?

A part of him wanted to leave them be. They were no danger now. The anger wouldn’t let it go though. The longer he stared at them the angrier he got. The anger took on a life of its own, burning more strongly with every passing moment. Finally he lost control, ordering the robot to open fire. He had it miss to begin with, striking the wall beside the guards and sweeping towards them. Too
